For those that don't know, the Darwin Awards are a list of awards that are given out when some ensures the survival of the species by permanently removing themselves from the gene pool in a rather unique, nonsensical and stupid way. There are several rules that go along with it: (found at http://www.darwinawards.com/rules/) Reproduction Out of the gene pool: dead or sterile. Excellence Astounding misapplication of judgment. Self-Selection Cause one's own demise. Matu...

Am I the only one that finds it humorously ironic that Hamas is proclaiming the latest suicide bombing (by a member of Islamic Jihad) as "self-defense"? How can blowing yourself up be a form of selfdefense? Last time I checked - self-defense was defending yourself form harm ... Anyways - While it wasn't Hamas that performed the action, by declaring it an act of self-defense (instead of condemning the action), the Palestinian leadership shows support for the continued murder of innocent ...

You ever have that feeling, particularly when you're rushed, that you've forgotten something? Well, it seems that the father in the story below had that feeling yesterday. Seems the dad in question was in a bit of a rush and got on the DC Metro, and was well into the city, before he remembered something that he'd left in the car - his 7 1/2 month old daughter! Talk about a bad day. Once he remembered he quickly turned around to go get her. Meanwhile, fellow commuters noticed...

Every year, I get reminded of how blessed I am to have four very happy, healthy children. Even my autistic son is the picture of health. Each year, country stations around the nation participate in the Country Cares Radio-thon to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. They spend two days broadcasting in a fund raising effort for the wonderful program at St. Jude's. For a good overview on what St. Jude does check out -> Link or read the link at the bottom (which is St...

or anyone who's loved one is away from home too often. For myself - this song strikes home because I've been away from home too often on business. When I'm away, I feel like there's a large chunk of *me* missing. California recently passed a law stating that it would be illegal to sell or rent Mature rated video games to minors (aka any person of 17 years of age or younger). However, several groups (Including the Washington lobbying group Entertainment Software Association (ESA)), state that it's unconstitutional as a violation of Free Speech. Evidently a Federal judge agrees, because the implementation of the law (due on Jan 1, 06) was blocked. More in the linked article. What strikes me as trul...

During the NFL season, there are 3 teams that I root for. One, of course, is my favorite team, the New York Giants. The others are (in no particular order) - whoever is playing Dallas and whoever is playing Washington. So, since Dallas is playing Washington (in Washington), it's brought up a little conundrum. Who should I root for? Of course, I go through this at least twice a season (and once already this season.) Oh, the horrors!!! Is it possible for BOTH teams to lose? In the s...

11 years ago today, I stood waiting for at the end of a long aisle for the one person that means the most to me in the whole world. When the music started playing, the doors at the back opened and there she stood, radiant, like an angel that got lost on the way to Heaven. My heart stopped as she walked down the aisle, her hand on her uncle's arm. See, this is where things get a little confusing. Her uncle gave her away. Her dad was standing there at the front of the church, waiting. He ...

*SSSSSNNNNNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF* eww... I guess it's time to put my shoes back on. I've been a computer programmer/developer for (officially ... 6 years now - unofficially ... it's going on 24) awhile. I've come in on projects that are in it's death throws (aka Maintenance mode) and I've been on projects that, while already going, are still in the middle of an series of active development cycles. I've enjoyed both of these environments. They both mak...

I just got back from spending the weekend in Alabama.  Got word Thursday afternoon that my grandmother (my mom's mom) passed away.  Now, it's sad, and kind of unexpected, but it's not really unexpected.  See, she's been going down hill drastically for the last year (and more) so we were all expecting it, at some point.  The exact timing threw us off, a little. We had family from Virginia, Indiana, Texas, and right there in Alabama converge on my Uncle's house on the Second...

Okay, just a word up front.  This is a whine/rant/venting article.  If you're not interested, please feel free to ignore this. Having said all of that ... Lately, I've been dealing with some odd health issues.  For the last couple of weeks, I've been going through strange symptoms.  I've got weakness (and general aches) in my legs (primarily the hips, knees and ankles, and it's bi-lateral).  I've got issues with being in the sun (after more anything more than a c...

In the past couple of years, one of the local Wiccan priestesses has gotten her panties twisted in a knot because the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors (County south of Richmond, VA) wouldn't let her open their sessions in prayer.  Instead, they returned to some of the local ministers to fulfill that duty.  So, she did what any redblooded American would do.  She sued them. The Federal judge in Richmond sided with her.  However, our buddies on the 4th Circuit (Gee, i...

It seems that I've got some very talented folks living here in this house with me.  My wife and our boys were entered into the State Fair this year, in several categories.  Seems that they did VERY well  this year.  Chris - my youngest son (5 years old) - placed 3rd in the Honey Sweetened bread category.  He was competing against his oldest brother (see JT below), so we got 2 of the 3 top awards in that category.  His cookies, didn't place, though. Micah - o...
